By on January 27, 2013

Working on a slow computer has to be one of the most irritating things ever. Instead of putting up with your slow computer, there are some things you can do about it. You will first need to find out what is causing your computer to run slow, is the internet? Or is it just an old computer? Once you know what is causing it to go slow, you can finally do something about it.

Uninstall Old and Unused Programmes

Many people will continue to download and install more programmes without clearing up the programmes they no longer need. A computer system will run much faster with the less programmes that is has on it. However, it is important that you don’t remove files and programmes that your computer needs. If you do remove a programme that the computer needs to run smoothly, then you can cause yourself a lot of problems. Only remove the programmes that you installed and no longer need.

Tip: To uninstall old programmes, go onto Control Panel, then onto Add/Remove Programmes. You can then uninstall the programmes you no longer want.

Install Anti-Virus Software

To ensure that your computer does not get any harmful viruses on, it is essential that you have valid up to date anti-virus software. You are able to get good quality software at a reasonable price from most good computer/electronic specialists.

Once you have installed your anti-virus software, you should complete a scan to see if you currently have any threats or viruses on your computer. If you do, you should click the “Remove” option on the anti-virus software.

Clean Up Your Disk Space

Each time you search for something on the internet, open attachments or delete files, your computer will automatically make a record of this. If you spend quite a lot of time on your computer, then this may be the reason to why your computer has started to slow down a little.

Windows have created a utility known as “Disk Cleanup” to help keep unused and unwanted files taking up storage space on your computer.

If you believe a disk cleanup will help speed up your computer you should go on to the Start options, then onto Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disc Cleanup. A box will then appear and you will have to tick off the files that you want to delete. Most files will be ok to delete, however some may help your computer run more smoothly. If you are unsure about a certain file, you should just leave it on the system.
